What Is Byudreon?

Bydureon is an injectable diabetes medication used to control blood sugar levels. One of the newest medications in the field of diabetes pharmaceuticals, Bydureon is an extended-release form of exenatide (Byetta®), which specifically treats type-2 diabetes. Bydureon works by simulating pancreatic production of insulin levels. The medication is typically administered through an injection weekly, as opposed to twice-a-day injections of Byetta. Physicians may elect to prescribe Bydureon as a way to regulate blood glucose levels and to avoid the multiple injections inherent to using Byetta. As a long-acting medication, Bydureon only requires diabetes patients to take an injection once a week and at any time of the day. Bydureon can also be injected on various parts of the body, including the upper arm, thigh, and abdomen.

Bydureon & Thyroid / Pancreatic Cancer

Studies involving the use of extended release exenatide, such as Bydureon, in lab rats noted an increased incidence of thyroid C-Cell tumors. While it is currently unknown as to whether Bydureon causes thyroid C-cell tumors in humans, questions have been raised about the risks posed by this advanced, long-acting diabetes medication. Bydureon has also been linked to increased risks of pancreatic cancer, which is a form of cancer that forms in the cells and tissues of the pancreas. Thyroid cancer and pancreatic cancer are both considered serious, life-threatening medical conditions.

In many cases, pancreatic cancer can develop without visible symptoms. While early detection and intervention always provide the best chances for effective treatment, the nature of pancreatic cancer may result in late stage diagnoses. It is important for any patient taking Bydureon or an exenatide medication to be aware of the common signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer:

  • Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Abdominal pain and bloating
  • Nausea and diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Dark colored urine or pale colored stools
  • Excessive itching
