Testosterone & Associated Risks of Heart Attack

In the past year, several studies have suggested that testosterone products – including topical gels, transdermal patches, buccal system, and injections – may increase the risk of heart attack.

  • One study published in PLOS One found that testosterone therapy doubled the risk of heart attack in men over the age of 65, and nearly tripled the risk of heart attack in men with a history of heart disease. You can read more about this study on this blog post.
  • A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in November, 2013 suggested that men in the research group faced a 30% increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and death after using testosterone.

FDA Safety Announcement

More Information About Testosterone

In response to these two studies, as well as findings from other researchers, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety announcement on January 31, 2014, stating that it would be investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in men taking FDA-approved testosterone products. As of now, the FDA has not conclusively determined that FDA-approved testosterone products lead to an increased risk but is continuing its research efforts.

The FDA recommends that anyone who experiences adverse effects has questions about risks associated with testosterone therapy, or is considering stopping prescribed testosterone treatments consult their health care provider. The safety announcement also states that testosterone should only be used by men who have low testosterone in conjunction with an associated medical condition. Many in the medical community have expressed concerns about the popularity of testosterone and the number of men taking testosterone therapy without an associated medical condition.
