Defective Pelvic Surgical Mesh and Slings

Pelvic organ prolapse, also known as “POP,” occurs when a woman’s pelvic organ, such as the bladder or uterus, drops (prolapses) from its normal spot in the lower belly and pushes against the walls of the vagina. This can happen when the muscles that hold pelvic organs in place get weak or stretched from childbirth. You may also experience POP if you have had surgery to remove your uterus (hysterectomy). Removing the uterus can sometimes leave other organs in the pelvis with less support.

More than one pelvic organ can prolapse at the same time. Organs that can be involved when you have pelvic prolapse include the bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, small bowel, and rectum. Older women are more likely to have POP. It also tends to run in families.

Decisions about treating POP depend on which pelvic organs have prolapsed and how bad a person’s symptoms are. People with mild to moderate symptoms may be best off without undergoing surgery. Some people can relieve many of your symptoms by adopting new, healthy habits. Special exercises (called Kegels) can make pelvic muscles stronger.

Surgery is a treatment option for people with serious symptoms of POP. In recent years, doctors have performed hundreds of thousands of surgeries to repair POP in women. Many of these surgeries have been performed using several types of implanted medical devices known as vaginal and bladder meshes, nets, and slings. However, these products may cause major complications.

On July 13, 2011, the United States Food & Drug Administration issued a strong warning about vaginal meshes, pelvic meshes, and bladder slings. From January 2008 through December 2010, the FDA received one thousand five hundred and three (1503) reports of serious complications in patients who had vaginal mesh products implanted. The FDA revealed to the public that the complications being experienced by thousands of women are not rare, that there is no good evidence that these products help people with POP better than other types of treatment and surgeries, and that the risks with the mesh-type repairs may be very high.

Women are experiencing many types of problems following vaginal mesh surgery for their urinary incontinence or POP. These products may cause scar tissue, painful urination, painful sex (dyspareunia), pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, mesh erosion into the vagina, bladder, intestines and uterus, mesh shrinkage or contraction, mesh migration, mesh exposure, infections, and development of urinary retention, nerve pain, fistulas and recurrence of prolapsed organs.
