CD Horizon Legacy Spinal System

The CD Horizon spinal device is designed to correct scoliosis or abnormal curvature of the spine. It consists of a series of rods, hooks, and screws and is made of titanium or implantable-grade stainless steel. Individuals implanted with the CD Horizon typically have a pre-existing spinal problem. If the patient experiences a cable break, there may be a new back injury with additional pain. The number of CD Horizon Legacy spinal systems on the market is uncertain, but it could be as high as 200,000.

Why was the CD Horizon approved by the FDA?

Because the CD Horizon system was substantially similar to other devices already on the market, the manufacturer did not require approval for the device. The system is surgically attached to the spine to relieve pain in the back and legs through stabilization. The Medtronic CD Horizon was on the market for less than 12 months when numerous reports of device cables were found to be prone to failure.

Other Medtronic Spinal Devices

Aside from the CD Horizon system, Medtronic makes a variety of other spinal devices including:

  • The Prestige Cervical Disc – This device is inserted in place of a diseased or bulging disc in the neck and allows the area to be moveable and flexible.
  • Infuse Bone Graft and LT Cage Device – This replaces the need to take bone from the hip to use in reconstruction of an area of the spine, and helps to prevent future spinal fractures.
  • X-Stop Spacer – This is a device used to treat patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, or a narrowing of the spinal canal.
