U.S. Centers for Disease Control Report on OxyElite Pro

On October 11, 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published its weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report covering the recent news of increased reports of adverse health effects suffered by consumers who used OxyElite Pro, a dietary supplement marketed by USPLabs, LLC.

In the report, it was revealed that the Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH), the CDC, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have reviewed a number of serious liver injury cases, and the agencies, while continuing to investigate, have observed a startling but as yet not fully explained statistical association between OxyElite Pro and the sick patients.

CDC Findings on OxyElite Pro Liver Injury Cases

According to the report, the Hawaii Department of Health investigated 29 cases of acute hepatitis and liver failure affecting individuals who had experienced liver injury after taking one or more dietary supplements. Commonly reported symptoms included:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Light-colored stools
  • Dark urine
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

Of the 29 patients, 11 were hospitalized, two received liver transplants, and one patient died as the result of liver damage. Additionally, 24 of the 29 patients reported using OxyElite Pro in the 60 days before the onset of illness. Three patients reported using a different dietary supplement and information about two patients was reportedly unknown. You can view the CDC report here.

Although the study was limited to Hawaii, the CDC did state that it would be working with different state health departments to conduct additional investigations of the association between liver injury and OxyElite Pro. The report also stated that determining which ingredient caused liver injury would be difficult, although it has been noted that USPLabs recently “reformulated” the product after a prior version was withdrawn from the market because it contained DMAA, a stimulant-type substance considered illegal by the FDA and potentially dangerous.
