What’s the problem?

Propoxyphene is one of the most common pain management prescriptions written in America used to treat mild to moderate pain. In February 2006, consumer advocacy group Public Citizen urged the FDA to withdraw propoxyphene-containing drugs from the market. To date, over 10,000 deaths – at least 2,110 of these being accidental overdoses – have been reported after the use of drugs containing propoxyphene.

FDA Withdraws Propoxyphene

In November 2010, propoxyphene was removed from the U.S. market at the request of the FDA due to new data showing that the drug can cause serious toxicity to the heart. The administration stated that the safety risks of propoxyphene significantly outweigh its benefits and requested that generic manufacturers remove their products as well. These products include the widely prescribed pain relievers Darvocet and Darvon.

According to the November 19th FDA alert on propoxyphene:

“FDA recommends that healthcare professionals stop prescribing and dispensing propoxyphene-containing products to patients, contact patients currently taking propoxyphene-containing products and ask them to discontinue the drug, inform patients of the risks associated with propoxyphene, and discuss alternative pain management strategies.”

If you are taking Propoxyphene

FDA recommends consumers taking products that contain propoxyphene should:

  • Talk to their doctor about discontinuing propoxyphene and switching to alternative pain medicines.
  • Contact their healthcare professional right away if they experience an abnormal heart rate or rhythm or other symptoms including dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting or heart palpitations.
  • Dispose of unused propoxyphene by following recommendations outlined in the Federal Drug Disposal Guidelines.
