What is Fosamax?

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate drug used to treat and prevent bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Unfortunately, Fosamax has been linked to a serious bone disease called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

Fosamax & ONJ

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a disease in which bone tissue in the jaw does not heal correctly. Over the past five years, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Merck claiming that rather than increasing bone density and strengthening bones, the drug can actually cause a deterioration of the jaw bone and contribute to femur fractures.

Fosamax & Femur Fractures

In October 2010, The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) required Merck & Co. Inc., the manufacturer of Fosamax (generic: Alendronate sodium) to change the labeling on the osteoporosis drug to include a warning citing the increased risk of Fosamax femur fractures among patients.
