To further contribute to growing concerns, the European Medicines Agency officially acknowledged that fourth generation contraceptives that contain drospirenone may contribute to an elevated risk in developing venous thromboembolism (VTE). Venous thromboembolism is a condition in which a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in a patient’s body. It is considered a serious condition, in that it may cause a blood clot to form in a vein that can break loose and travel to the heart and lungs. As a result, patients may subject themselves to a heart attack or stroke.
