Drospirenone in Yaz and Yasmin May Double Blood Clot Risks

Recent studies published in the British Medical Journal acknowledge an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, a severe form of blood clotting deep within the body, among users of forth generation oral contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin. In fact, the risk of developing a Yaz or Yasmin related blood clot is twice that of previous levonorgestrel-based birth control pills.

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, and Beyaz all contain the active ingredient drospirenone, a progestin that prevents ovulation and also causes drastic changes in cervical and uterine linings that make it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Unfortunately, women who take contraceptives that contain drospirenone may be unaware of the potentially fatal side effects associated with it.

Researchers from the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program at Boston University School of Medicine examined close to 900 women who have been using contraceptives since 2002. Women who were taking Yaz or Yasmin, saw a rate of blood clots that reached 30.8 per 100,000 person-years. For women talking levonorgestrel-based pills, the rate was only 12.5 per 100,000 person-years. Women taking drospirenone-based oral contraceptives were about twice as likely to develop a dangerous blood clot.

The author of the aforementioned study concluded that “These findings support more recent studies that suggest that drospirenone oral contraceptives are not as safe as levonorgestrel oral contraceptives with respect to venous thromboembolism”.

Currently Bayer, the manufacturer of these drospirenone oral contraceptives, faces close to 7,000 Yaz lawsuits and Yasmin lawsuits. Allegations point to these forms of birth control as being responsible for stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease and numerous other complications.
