New Study Suggests DMAA Is Not a Derivative of Geranium Oil

Regulatory agencies around the world have begun to question the status of dimethylamylamine (DMAA) after an influx of adverse events and ambiguous results continue to compound the current situation. As a result, intensive investigations have attempted to classify the questionable dietary supplement. The most recent of which witnessed a revolutionary discovery. According to the recent study, DMAA is not a derivative of geranium oil.

DMAA has been marketed as a dietary supplement ingredient in combination with caffeine and other ingredients to be used as an over-the-counter thermogenic or general purpose stimulant intended to increase workout energy and efficiency. However, misconceptions regarding the origins of DMAA have caused a great deal of controversy in the pharmaceutical industry.

DMAA is currently marketed as a dietary supplement whose origins are from that of the geranium plant. However, there is no substantiated evidence that suggests such an assumption exists. In fact, the only source documenting that DMAA is a geranium derivative is a non reputable, Chinese peer-reviewed journal of chemistry. Until recently, it was this journal that provided healthcare officials with the ambiguous information that had become accustomed to. After analyzing the Chinese study, researchers concluded that the current labeling practices are simply a ploy to develop a broader marketing base.

It was not until a recent study that researchers were finally able to contradict the previous findings published in the Chinese journal. Their findings affirm previous doubts about the ingredient identification in the “Ping” study, “that their identification was incorrect or possibly incorrectly translated.”

The study analyzed four supplements – Adrenaline, Bang, Lipo 6 Black, and Phenadrine – only to find a distinct difference in each of their labeled contents and constituent ingredients. Each of these products claimed to contain DMAA, however, conclusive data revealed that Adrenaline and Phenadrine were the only two to that contained the questionable ingredient. Accordingly, the study suggests that the original study may have been misinterpreted, therefore leading to further ambiguity.
