Zimmer NexGen Knee Replacement Recall

Zimmer, a world leader in musculoskeletal health, has recently been the target of intense public scrutiny after numerous reports of product failure have plagued the company.

As early as last year, Zimmer announced a recall of their Zimmer NexGen MIS knee replacement system upon receiving confirmation that 68,000 components were reported to have been linked to an increased failure rate after only minimal use. As a result, the faulty and defective components caused patients to suffer from intense bouts of pain and suffering.

Unfortunately, the recipients of Zimmer knee replacement systems have to worry about yet another recall issued by the company. Last year on September 15, Zimmer issued a recall of NexGen Complete Knee Solutions LPS components after many were discovered to have nonconforming and inconsistent geometry. Defects such as these were the cause of pain and suffering in many patients that could only be resolved through costly revision surgery.

Initial concerns were acknowledged when Dr. Richard A. Berger, a former consultant for Zimmer, presented evidence that suggested complications with the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex knee. Patients who received this system required revision surgery in nearly 9% of the cases examined. Knee replacement loosening was also reported in more than a third of the cases.
