Zegerid® Lawyer & Lawsuit

Zegerid (generic: omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate) is a duel-ingredient heartburn medication that prohibits the reflux of excessive stomach acid into the esophagus. Unfortunately, patients who use this medication, may be doing so without knowing about potentially dangerous Zegerid side effects. An increased rate of Zegerid bone fracture has become synonymous with this medication.

If you or a loved one has been injured by Zegerid, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.

What’s the problem?

Zegerid contains a combination of omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that decreases the amount of acid your stomach produces. Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid that raises the pH in your stomach to keep the omeprazole from breaking down in stomach acid. As a PPI, omeprazole works to halt the production of acid from millions of over-active stomach pumps that may lead to heartburn or other complications caused by excessive amounts of stomach acid.

Unfortunately, Zegerid side effects may lead to hazardous complications that can outweigh the benefits of the heartburn medication. Patients who take this drug, may be doing so without knowing about these potentially dangerous Zegerid side effects. Those who use Zegerid may suffer from severe bone fractures as the result of diminished bone dexterity. For this reason, many people have begun to file Zegerid lawsuits.

Zegerid Bone Fracture

Federal health regulators are warning doctors and patients that popular PPI heartburn medications like Zegerid may cause severe bone fractures when used for a long period of time. As reported on by several studies, the continual use of Zegerid may lead to increased risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures in patients who use the drug to block stomach acid.

FDA Bone Fracture Warning

The FDA issued a warning to consumers and health care professionals about a possible increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine with proton pump inhibitors like Zegerid. The product labeling will be changed to describe this possible increased risk.

“Epidemiology studies suggest a possible increased risk of bone fractures with the use of proton pump inhibitors for one year or longer, or at high doses,” said Joyce Korvick, M.D., deputy director for safety in FDA’s Division of Gastroenterology Products.
FDA’s warning and decision to revise the labeling of proton pump inhibitors are based on the Agency’s review of several epidemiological studies that reported an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine in patients using proton pump inhibitors.
