Health Advisory for OxyElite Pro

Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH), publicly announced their investigation of the dietary supplement product labeled OxyElite Pro. The investigation is the result of the growing number of cases of acute non-viral hepatitis that have been reported in Hawaii. As revealed by the DOH and a CDC Report, no fewer than 24 of the reported cases share a common link to the dietary supplement known as OxyElite Pro, hence the investigation. To date:

  • 29 cases of non-viral hepatitis with no known cause have been reported in Hawaii
  • 11 of the 29 cases have resulted in hospitalization for acute hepatitis
  • 2 of the 29 cases have resulted in liver transplants
  • 1 of the 29 cases has resulted in death

A closer look into the history of the OxyElite Pro product shows that the dietary supplement, which is distributed by USPlabs LLC in Texas, has been distributed in states throughout the country. Consumers have purchased OxyElite Pro in stores that sell dietary supplements as well as online. Accordingly, the FDA is recommending that any consumer who purchased the dietary supplement immediately cease use while the investigation continues. Anyone who believes that their health might have suffered from use of the dietary supplement is urged to contact a professional healthcare practitioner immediately.

In the epidemiological investigation being conducted by the DOH, the CDC, and the FDA, a thorough review of the patients’ medical records will be conducted, as will a full inspection of the facilities involved in the product’s manufacture. Also under investigation will be an analysis of the composition of OxyElite Pro, the product of the supplement, and the product’s distribution records. USPlabs LLC has also suggested to the FDA that the company believes that counterfeit versions of the supplement have been marketed in the U.S. – a fact that will also be addressed in the FDA’s investigation .
