Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino Reaches $3.8 Million Sexual Abuse Settlement

The Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino recently announced a $3.8 million settlement involving two cases of alleged sexual abuse of minors by a former priest. The cases involved 60-year-old Alejandro “Alex” Castillo, a former Catholic priest who had served at Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. George parish in Ontario. Officials from the Diocese also stated that Castillo served as St. Catherine’s in Rialto and St. Anthony’s in San Bernardino.

Castillo had come under scrutiny for alleged sexual abuse of two minors. A third case involving another victim may soon be filed. Castillo was criminally charged with lewd and lascivious acts involving a 12-year-old boy, to which he pleaded guilty. Castillo served eight months in jail and is now a registered sex offender. Church officials have also stated that the Vatican recently ordered Castillo permanently removed from the priesthood. The settlement announcement was made this past Sunday in each of the parishes Castillo served. Church officials are also encouraging other possible victims to report the abuse.

Cases of sexual abuse by clergy have become a prominent media focus not only because they occur in a religious institution, but also because they highlight the prevalence of sexual abuse in organizations where individuals have significant authority over minors. At The Senators (Ret.) Firm, our California sexual abuse attorneys are prepared to protect the rights of sexual abuse victims and their families and secure the justice and compensation they rightfully deserve.
