Loryna® Deep Vein Thrombosis Lawyer & Lawsuit

Please note, The Senators (Ret.) Firm, LLP is no longer accepting Loryna claims. If you feel that you may have a potential case, we urge you to locate another law firm adequately suited to handle your claim.

Deep vein thrombosis, otherwise known as DVT, is characterized as a blood clot that occurs deep within bodily tissue. While blood clots typically prevent the displacement of blood, an unnecessary DVT may result in the development of severe, life-threatening complications. Though they are relatively uncommon, the rate in which DVT occurs may be influenced by outside factors. Subsequently, women who receive Loryna treatment may significantly increase their risk of developing deep vein thrombosis and any corresponding complications that may ensue.

If you or a loved one has suffered from deep vein thrombosis after taking Loryna, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.

Loryna Deep Vein Thrombosis Lawsuit Overview

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved of the use of Loryna on March 28, 2011. Shortly after gaining the FDA’s approval, Loryna was launched by Sandoz. Similar to that of its brand name equivalent Yaz, Loryna was indicated to assist in the prevention of pregnancy for those who chose the route of oral contraceptive. Loryna was also approved to treat moderate bouts of acne in women 14 years or older.

As a fourth generation contraceptive, Loryna utilizes an active ingredient known as drospirenone. Drospirenone is a progestin that has the inherent ability to alter the conditions in the cervical and uterine lining, therefore preventing the ovulation process in women. By suppressing what are known as gonadotropins, drospirenone inhibits ovulation by altering the cervical mucus (which increases the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduces the likelihood of implantation).

Unfortunately, recent data suggests that Loryna treatment may result in catastrophic complications. Accordingly, representatives from a Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and a Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the FDA convened to discuss the safety and efficacy of fourth generation contraceptives that contain drospirenone. During the meeting, it was acknowledged that drospirenone may elevate potassium levels too much. Subsequently, such an elevation may result in the development of severe blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If the development of a DVT inhibits the flow of blood to certain parts of the body, several complications may occur. Subsequently, DVT may result in a stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism and even death. If you have taken this contraceptive and are worried about experiencing dangerous side effects, contact one of our lawyers to see if you qualify for a Loryna deep vein thrombosis lawsuit.

DVT Complications

The following complications are currently being evaluated in pending Loryna deep vein thrombosis lawsuits:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Pulmonary embolism

Heart Attack

Heart attacks are directly correlated to a distinct lack of blood flow that neglects to provide coronary tissue with the appropriate nutrients to survive. The inhibition of oxygenated blood flow through the heart, often caused by a blood clot, starves the heart of nutrients. The longer the heart is deprived of these nutrients, the more damage is sustained by the coronary tissue. If the flow of blood is blocked for too long, the heart may fail.

Unfortunately, once a patient has suffered from a heart attack, their chance of having a subsequent one is increased. How well they do after the heart attack depends on the damage to their heart muscle and heart valves, and where that damage has taken place. If the heart can no longer pump blood in a sufficient manner, they may experience heart failure.

Stroke

A stroke, otherwise known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is a distinct and rapid deterioration of brain functions due to a blockage in the blood supply to the brain. Strokes can be classified in one of two different categories, hemorrhage and ischemia. Hemorrhages witness the severe displacement of blood, whereas ischemia strokes are the direct result of an obstruction blocking blood flow. More often than not, blood clots are responsible for ischemia strokes. Either way, the affected areas of the brain are unable to function properly resulting in the following complications:

  • Paralysis
  • Loss of muscle movement
  • Difficulty talking
  • Inability to understand or formulate speech
  • Visual impairment
  • Memory loss
  • Severe pain
  • Changes in behavior
  • Death

A stroke is classified as a medical emergence and can cause permanent neurological damage, complications, and death. It is the leading cause of adult disability in the U.S. and Europe and the second leading cause of death worldwide. Women who have taken this contraceptive and experienced complications such as these may be eligible to file their own Loryna stroke lawsuit.

Pulmonary Embolism

According to recent studies, Safyral may increase the risk of a woman experiencing a pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolisms are characterized by a blockage in one or more arteries in the lungs. Often times, pulmonary embolisms are caused by a blood clot in the veins that fractures and travels to the lungs. The resulting blockage may prevent a sufficient amount of oxygenated blood from being circulated throughout the body. Therefore, a pulmonary embolism may starve vital organs of oxygen and ultimately lead to severe complications.

Similar Drospirenone-Containing Contraceptives

The following fourth generation contraceptives contain drospirenone and may also significantly increase the risk of a woman suffering from the complications associated with DVT:

  • Yasmin
  • Ocella
  • Gianvi
  • Yaz
  • Safyral
  • Beyaz
