Fentanyl Pain Patch Background

Fentanyl (fentanyl citrate) is a drug used to treat post-operative and breakthrough pain that works by blocking pain receptors in the brain. It is approximately 100 times stronger than morphine, and classified as a schedule II drug (dangerous with a high potential for abuse) under the Controlled Substances Act. Fentanyl pain patches are used to deliver controlled doses of narcotic pain medication through the skin over a specified period of time, and are typically prescribed for patients who require round-the-clock pain control.

Actavis Fentanyl Patch Recall

A serious defect risk has been reported with the Actavis fentanyl patch which puts users at high risk of direct exposure to fentanyl gel. Exposure to this powerful gel can lead to serious adverse events including severe respiratory distress and even death. In light of these findings, Actavis Inc. recalled 14 lots of the patch in February 2008. Less than a month later, the company expanded the recall to include all lots of Actavis fentanyl patches sold nationwide.

Actavis Fentanyl Patch Side Effects

According to FDA reports, there are a number of deficiencies possible with Actavis fentanyl pain patches. The fold-over imperfection is one of several problems that can cause leaking. This direct fentanyl exposure may lead to serious injury. Slowed heartbeat and breathing, pinpoint pupils, clammy skin, loss of consciousness, and seizures are all signs of a fentanyl overdose. The victim could also stop breathing completely. To date, there have been hundreds of reports of deaths from these overdoses.
