Agromod Papaya Recall Lawsuit Overview

On July 23, 2011, healthcare officials from the FDA were alerted to trace amounts of Salmonella Agona that had been found in two separate shipments of Agromod papayas. The first of which was located at the Agromod Produce, Inc. location in McAllen, Texas. The second shipment of contaminated papayas was discovered at the U.S. border, destined for the same distribution center that had previously tested positive for salmonella Agona. Each of the contaminated shipments of papayas were imported from Mexico.

The contaminated papayas may have been distributed to wholesale and retail locations nationwide in the U.S. and Canada. Among the contaminated products are four distinct brands of both processed and unprocessed papayas. These brands include Yaya, Blondie, Mañanita and Tastylicious.

The distribution of papayas contaminated with Salmonella Agona pose as a serious health concern. Salmonella food poisoning can prove to be extremely dangerous, if not fatal, to those with weakened immune systems like infants or the elderly. As a result, the FDA is investigating the current situation in collaboration with the Centers for CDC and public health agencies in each of the states where reports of the contamination have surfaced.
