FDA Alert on Fluvoxamine
In July 2006, the FDA issued an alert warning about the increased risk of Neonatal Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) to babies born to mothers taking SSRI antidepressants such as Fluvoxamine. Since then, a great deal of information has been emerging that certain SSRIs may cause a variety of birth defects including autism, neural-tube defects, craniosynostosis, infant omphalocele, club foot, and anal atresia.
Fluvoxamine & PPHN
Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is a catastrophic birth defect in which the newborn’s arteries to the lungs remain constricted after delivery. This limits the amount of blood flow to the lungs and oxygen into the bloodstream. Newborns with PPHN often require intubation and mechanical ventilation. Sadly, 10 to 20 percent of affected infants do not survive even if they receive treatment.
According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, women who take SSRI antidepressants late in pregnancy are two times more likely to give birth to a child with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.
Fluvoxamine & Suicide
Aside from these birth defects, Fluvoxamine has also been associated with an increased risk of suicide among patients. The FDA has noted an increase risk of suicide, suicidal behavior, and suicidal ideation affiliated with the drug. According to a 2004 FDA warning, children and adolescents taking Fluvoxamine are at the highest risk for suicidality.
