Why Was Darvocet Recalled?

The FDA requested that Darvocet and all products containing the painkiller propoxyphene be removed from the market on November 19, 2010. The safety of Darvocet has long been a controversial topic, and a recent study provided conclusive evidence that propoxyphene-containing drugs cause potentially deadly heart rhythm abnormalities, even in healthy patients at prescribed doses. The new data forced the FDA to conclude that propoxyphene’s “overall balance of risk and benefit can no longer be considered favorable.”

How does Darvocet affect the heart?

Darvocet’s chemicals block the potassium and sodium channels in the heart. This slows the heart muscle’s ability to transmit electrical currents leading to respiratory problems, convulsions, and cardiac arrest. A recent study found that propoxyphene slowed down the time between heartbeats by an average of 30 to 40 milliseconds – any change by more than 20 milliseconds significantly increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmia.

Cardiac Arrhythmia

Cardiac arrhythmia is an abnormal rhythm of the heart which can be diagnosed by an electrocardiogram (ECG). Arrhythmia can interfere with the heart’s ability to pump blood causing:

  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain
  • lightheadedness
  • loss of consciousness
  • heart attack
  • sudden death
