What is Gadolinium?

Gadolinium is a colorless liquid that doctors inject into the veins of certain patients undergoing magnetic resonance imagery (MRI) procedures. The liquid is designed to bond with damaged or diseased tissues, giving doctors a clearer picture of the body’s internal processes. Unfortunately, gadolinium has recently been linked to a number of serious side effects including Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF).

Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)

NSF is a recently discovered disease that affects the skin and results in tightening and swelling that can limit the movement of the joints. The skin may also develop red or darkened patches, plaques, or papules. The patient may experience burning, itching, or severe pain in the area. A number of treatments have been tried and are being investigated, though none have proved consistently successful.

Many claim that the only way you can get NSF is from a gadolinium injection. In fact, the disorder did not even exist until 1997, when gadolinium compounds first came into use. There are currently hundreds of cases of NSF around the country, and the number continues to grow.

FDA ‘Black Box’ Warning on Gadolinium

In May 2007, the FDA announced that it was requiring gadolinium-based contrast agents to include a ‘black box’ warning – the administration’s strictest – to product packaging alerting patients to the risk of a potentially fatal disease. Gadolinium-based agents implicated by the warning include:

  • Magnevist (gadopentetate dimeglumine)
  • Omniscan (gadodiamide)
  • OptiMARK (gadoversetamide)
  • MultiHance (gadobenate dimeglumine)
  • ProHance (gadoteridol)
