Loryna® Lawyer & Lawsuit

Please note, The Senators (Ret.) Firm, LLP is no longer accepting Loryna claims. If you feel that you may have a potential case, we urge you to locate another law firm adequately suited to handle your claim.

As a generic equivalent to the already popular Yaz, Loryna (generic: drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) is an oral contraceptive indicted for the prevention of pregnancy. When used as directed, Loryna has proven to be 99 percent effective. However, millions of women who take this contraceptive may place themselves in harms way. Women who receive Loryna treatment may significantly increase their risk of developing severe, life-threatening blood clots and any corresponding complications that may ensue.

If you or a loved one has been injured by Loryna, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.

Loryna Lawsuit Overview

Loryna received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 28, 2011. Shortly after gaining the FDA’s approval, Loryna was launched by Sandoz in the U.S. with the intentions of preventing pregnancy and the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age.

As a fourth generation contraceptive, Loryna utilizes an active ingredient known as drospirenone. Drospirenone is a progestin that has the inherent ability to alter the conditions in the cervical and uterine lining, therefore preventing the ovulation process in women. By suppressing what are known as gonadotropins, drospirenone inhibits ovulation by altering the cervical mucus (which increases the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduces the likelihood of implantation).

While Loryna and similar drospirenone-containing contraceptives have demonstrated the ability to prevent pregnancy, their use has become synonymous with catastrophic side effects. Of significant concern, is their potential to elevate blood potassium levels beyond that of which is considered safe. In the unfortunate event that potassium levels spike, women may be at risk of developing a severe, life-threatening blood clot known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). According to the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the FDA, the development of DVT may result in serious conditions, including blood clots, stroke and heart attack. The risk of blood clots is highest during the first year of use. If you have taken Loryna and are worried about these complications, contact our lawyers today to see if you qualify for a Loryna lawsuit.

Loryna Side Effects

The following side effects have been associated with the use of Loryna:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Bleeding between menstrual periods
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Allergic reactions
  • Breast discharge
  • calf or leg pain
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Chest pain

Loryna Complications

Due to the elevated potassium levels created by Loryna, women receiving treatment may increase their risk of developing blood clots deep within bodily tissue. The presence of a severe enough blood clot may be responsible for the development of severe, life-threatening side effects. The following complications are directly correlated to the development of a blood clot and are currently being evaluated in Loryna lawsuits:

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • Heart arrhythmia
  • Death

FDA Warning

According to an FDA Safety Communication, the agency is aware of two newly published studies that evaluated the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in women who use birth control pills that contain drospirenone. The two recently published studies looked at whether there is a higher risk of blood clots in women taking birth control pills containing the progestin drospirenone when compared to similar women taking birth control pills containing a different progestin called levonorgestrel. These two new studies reported that there is a greater risk of VTE associated with birth control pills that contain drospirenone. The development of VTE may result in several severe, life-threatening complications including: heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, gallbladder disease and death.

Similar Drospirenone-Containing Contraceptives

The following fourth generation contraceptives contain drospirenone and may also significantly increase the risk of severe, life-threatening complications:
