Controversial Stimulant Finally Banned in the UK

DMAA, otherwise known as Dimethylamylamine, is a controversial ingredient in several dietary supplements that tout the miraculous ability to increase workout energy and efficiency. Of significant concern, however, is the exponential increase of adverse health reports that have been associated with the ingestion of DMAA-containing dietary supplements. Complicating the volatile situation, is a shroud of ambiguity that made it difficult for regulatory officials to classify DMAA as a dietary supplement due to its mysterious origins. However, the United Kingdom finally ended months of debate by banning the controversial stimulant.

Products containing DMAA have been marketed as a dietary supplements. When combined with caffeine and other ingredients, DMAA may be used as an over-the-counter thermogenic or general purpose stimulant intended to increase workout energy and efficiency. There are currently an abundance of DMAA products on store shelves. However, misconceptions regarding the origins and safety of DMAA have caused a great deal of controversy in the pharmaceutical industry.

DMAA has already been linked to the deaths of 2 U.S. soldiers. Mr. Graves, an Army representative, said that DMAA had been identified in the toxicology reports of two soldiers who suffered fatal heart attacks during physical exercise. In addition to the two deaths, Graves acknowledged a possible link between products with DMAA and an influx of kidney failure, seizures, loss of consciousness and rapid heartbeat in other military personnel. As a result, the Army has removed DMAA products from military shelves.

Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, acknowledged that “what we’ve seen is that DMAA in supplements has been connected to situations where the heart has gone suddenly into failure due to excessive stress.”

Due to the influx of adverse events associated with the consumption of DMAA, regulatory agencies around the world have been fighting to have it removed from their markets. It wasn’t until August 28, 2012 that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that Jack3d and, “all other DMAA containing products” have been declared unlicensed medicines that, “need to be removed from the UK market amid concerns of potential risks to public safety.

We are glad that we have been able to confirm the illegal status of Jack3d and DMAA after the ruling that Jack3d was indeed unlicensed,” said an unknown source.

Peter Berry Ottoway, technical director for the Council for Responsible Nutrition UK (CRN-UK), acknowledged that DMAA “has been ruled an illegal medicine as we [they] said all along.

The ruling of the UK to ban DMAA may have an overwhelming affect on the future of the controversial ingredient in other countries. It may only be a matter of time before subsequent regulatory agencies ban it as well.
