Loryna® Pulmonary Embolism Lawyer & Lawsuit

Please note, The Senators (Ret.) Firm, LLP is no longer accepting Loryna claims. If you feel that you may have a potential case, we urge you to locate another law firm adequately suited to handle your claim.

The development of pulmonary embolism is directly correlated to the presence of severe blood clots. Blood clots that occur deep within tissue, otherwise known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), may dislodge and travel to the nearest organ and serve as an obstruction. This obstruction may inhibit blood flow to the corresponding organ, starving it of necessary nutrients. Unfortunately, certain outside factors may contribute to the rate in which people develop a pulmonary embolism. Women who use Loryna (generic: drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) for a prolonged period of time may significantly increase their risk of suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

If you or a loved one has suffered from a pulmonary embolism after taking Loryna, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.

Loryna Pulmonary Embolism Lawsuit Overview

As a product of the generic drug manufacturer Sandoz, Loryna received the approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 28, 2011. Following said approval, Loryna was indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who chose to do so with an oral contraceptive. However, Loryna treatment is also indicated for the reduction of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age.

As a fourth generation contraceptive, Loryna utilizes an active ingredient known as drospirenone. Drospirenone is a progestin that has the inherent ability to alter the conditions in the cervical and uterine lining, therefore preventing the ovulation process in women. By suppressing what are known as gonadotropins, drospirenone inhibits ovulation by altering the cervical mucus (which increases the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduces the likelihood of implantation).

While Loryna is relatively new, it is the generic form of Yaz and therefore 99 percent effective when taken as directed. Of significant concern, however, is the inclusion of drospirenone. According to a joint FDA Advisory Committee, drospirenone may increase blood potassium levels beyond that of which is safe. Subsequently, elevated potassium levels may exhibit an increased propensity for the development of severe blood clots. In the event that one of these blood clots fractures or dislodges, the contents of the clot may be carried to the lungs. Once at the lungs the clot may prohibit the flow of blood into the organ. If the clot obstructs the flow of blood, the lungs are starved of nutrients and may result in a severe, life-threatening pulmonary embolism. If you have taken Loryna and are worried about these complications, contact our lawyers today to see if you qualify for a Loryna pulmonary embolism lawsuit.

Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolisms are characterized by a blockage in one or more arteries in the lungs. Often times, pulmonary embolisms are caused by a blood clot in the veins that fractures and travels to the lungs. The resulting blockage may prevent a sufficient amount of oxygenated blood from being circulated throughout the body. Therefore, a pulmonary embolism may starve vital organs of oxygen and ultimately lead to severe complications. The following complications are being evaluated in Loryna pulmonary embolism lawsuits:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA)
  • Heart attack
  • Myocardial infraction
  • Gallbladder complications
  • Death

FDA Safety Communication

According to an FDA Safety Communication, the agency is aware of two newly published studies that evaluated the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in women who use birth control pills that contain drospirenone. The two recently published studies looked at whether there is a higher risk of blood clots in women taking birth control pills containing the progestin drospirenone when compared to similar women taking birth control pills containing a different progestin called levonorgestrel. These two new studies reported that there is a greater risk of VTE associated with birth control pills that contain drospirenone. The development of VTE may result in several severe, life-threatening complications, one of which is the development of a pulmonary embolism.

Similar Drospirenone-Containing Contraceptives

The following fourth generation contraceptives contain drospirenone and may also significantly increase the risk of a woman suffering from a severe pulmonary embolism:

  • Yasmin
  • Ocella
  • Gianvi
  • Yaz
  • Safyral
  • Beyaz
