Drosperinone In New Contraceptives Increases Risks of Blood Clots

While “forth generation” contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin may be new to the market, they implement a technique that doctors have known about since birth control pills were originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). With that being said, doctors are aware that the combination of hormones that are needed to prevent pregnancy also induce serious blood clots.

However, drosperinone, a synthetic version of progesterone found in Ocella, Yaz andYasmin, may greatly increase the risk of women suffering from serious adverse health effects. Recent studies suggest that drosperinone, the active ingredient found in both Yaz and Yasmin, may increase a woman’s risk of developing a severe blood clot by two or three times that of an older contraceptive pill that utilizes a hormone known as levonorgestrel.

A recent study preformed by Dr. Grace Lau, an obstetrician and gynecologist working out of New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center, discovered that a women’s chances of developing a dangerous blood clot with newer contraceptives is 30.8 per 100,000 women years. These statistics indicate that newer contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin, that contain drosperinone, pose a greater threat to women than birth control pills of the past.

According to a study in the British Medical Journal, there is an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, a severe form of blood clotting deep within the body, among users of forth generation oral contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin. In fact, the risk of developing a Yaz or Yasmin related blood clot is twice that of previous levonorgestrel-based birth control pills.

Currently Bayer, the manufacturer of these drospirenone oral contraceptives, faces close to 7,000 Yaz lawsuits and Yasmin lawsuits. Allegations point to these forms of birth control as being responsible for stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease and numerous other complications.
