In the event that the brain does not receive an adequate supply of blood, corresponding brain cells will be deprived of necessary nutrients, resulting in a stroke. Should the brain be starved of nutrients for a prolonged period of time, the damage to the brain may result in several complications including: a permanent loss of motor function, memory loss, visual impairment, pain, and even death. Unfortunately, certain outside factors may contribute to the rate in which people develop this condition. Women who take Loryna (generic: drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) may significantly increase their risk of suffering from a stroke.

If you or a loved one has suffered from a stroke after taking Loryna, you should contact our lawyers immediately for a free confidential case evaluation. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and we can help.

Loryna Stroke Lawsuit Overview

Loryna, a product of Sandoz, is the generic equivalent to Yaz. Similar to that of Yaz, Loryna was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 28, 2011 to assist in the prevention of pregnancy. However, Loryna treatment is also indicated for the reduction of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age.

As a fourth generation contraceptive, Loryna utilizes an active ingredient known as drospirenone. Drospirenone is a progestin that has the inherent ability to alter the conditions in the cervical and uterine lining, therefore preventing the ovulation process in women. By suppressing what are known as gonadotropins, drospirenone inhibits ovulation by altering the cervical mucus (which increases the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduces the likelihood of implantation).

Unfortunately, the use of drospirenone-containing contraceptives has received a significant amount of criticism for their association with severe side effects. Accordingly, representatives from a Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and a Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the FDA convened to discuss the safety and efficacy of fourth generation contraceptives that contain drospirenone. During the meeting, it was acknowledged that drospirenone may elevate potassium levels too much. Subsequently, such an elevation may result in the development of severe blood clots known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Should a DVT form in an artery leading to the brain, the obstruction may lead to a stroke and even death. If you have taken this contraceptive and are worried about experiencing dangerous side effects, contact one of our lawyers to see if you qualify for a Loryna stroke lawsuit.

Stroke

A stroke, otherwise known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is a distinct and rapid deterioration of brain functions due to a blockage in the blood supply to the brain. Strokes can be classified in one of two different categories, hemorrhage and ischemia. Hemorrhages witness the severe displacement of blood, whereas ischemia strokes are the direct result of an obstruction blocking blood flow. More often than not, blood clots are responsible for ischemia strokes. Either way, the affected areas of the brain are unable to function properly resulting in the following complications:

  • Paralysis
  • Loss of muscle movement
  • Difficulty talking
  • Inability to understand or formulate speech
  • Visual impairment
  • Memory loss
  • Severe pain
  • Changes in behavior
  • Death

A stroke is classified as a medical emergence and can cause permanent neurological damage, complications, and death. It is the leading cause of adult disability in the U.S. and Europe and the second leading cause of death worldwide. Women who have taken this contraceptive and experienced complications such as these may be eligible to file their own Loryna stroke lawsuit.

FDA Safety Communication

According to an FDA Safety Communication, the agency is aware of two newly published studies that evaluated the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in women who use birth control pills that contain drospirenone. The two recently published studies looked at whether there is a higher risk of blood clots in women taking birth control pills containing the progestin drospirenone when compared to similar women taking birth control pills containing a different progestin called levonorgestrel. These two new studies reported that there is a greater risk of VTE associated with birth control pills that contain drospirenone. The development of VTE may result in several severe, life-threatening complications, one of which is the development of a stroke.

Similar Drospirenone-Containing Contraceptives

The following fourth generation contraceptives contain drospirenone and may also significantly increase the risk of a woman suffering from a severe stroke:

  • Yasmin
  • Ocella
  • Gianvi
  • Yaz
  • Safyral
  • Beyaz
