Prenatal Exposure to SSRIs Could Increase Risk of Infant Pulmonary Hypertension, According to Recent BMJ Article

In an article published by BMJ earlier this week, the link between the use of certain serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during pregnancy and the later development of pulmonary hypertension in newborns was examined. The findings of the study identified an important association between late-pregnancy exposure to SSRIs and the statistical likelihood of pulmonary hypertension in infants.

Used primarily for the treatment of major depressive disorder, SSRIs have become increasingly popular for the treatment of many more psychosomatic conditions, including panic disorder, anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the wide range of afflictions that SSRIs are now used to treat, it has never been more important to identify the potential risks of taking these types of drugs, as the BMJ article clearly established.

It has been found that using SSRIs in the late terms of pregnancy can lead to pulmonary hypertension disorder, which causes increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, thus affecting the lungs and the right side of the heart. Patients who suffer from pulmonary hypertension can experience heart failure, making it a potentially fatal condition.

If you are using any of the following SSRIs and you are pregnant, you should immediately speak to a medical professional.

  • Celexa
  • Lexapro
  • Luvox
  • Paxil and Paxil CR
  • Zoloft
