Consent Decree for New York Dietary Supplement Manufacturer Approved by Federal Judge

Last week, on Wednesday July 2, 2014, a Federal Judge in New York approved a consent decree for permanent injunction with Mira Health Products Ltd., a dietary supplement manufacturer based in Farmingdale, New York. The company had been under scrutiny since the FDA issued a consumer warning in July, 2013 regarding illnesses associated with Mira’s Healthy Life Chemistry by Purity First B-50 supplement.

The warning was issued following a number of adverse health reports from consumers, and after a laboratory study found that the product contained two drugs that are potentially harmful anabolic steroids – methasterone and dimethazine. According to FDA officials, the two potentially harmful ingredients were not listed on the product’s label and shouldn’t have been used in the supplement because they are illegal drugs. Mira recalled a number of dietary supplements in August, 2013.

Although Mira’s production of unapproved and adulterated products has cost the company its entire operation – Mira representatives have stated that the company is out of business – the new consent decree will require Mira to notify the FDA of its intent to resume operations and prove that its products comply with FDA regulations.
