AlloDerm, also known as acellular human dermis (AHD), was developed in 1994 by LifeCell as a hernia repair and breast reconstruction solution. It is created from skin tissue harvested from donated cadavers, processed, and used as skin grafts. AlloDerm is designed to allow the body to mount its own tissue regeneration process. However, recent studies have shown an extremely high rate of hernia recurrence in patients whose abdominal hernias were treated with AlloDerm.

What’s the problem?
AlloDerm claims their product provides excellent handling properties and exhibits remarkable versatility to convert into functional tissues that provide superior structural support. However, AlloDerm skin grafts have recently been linked to a number of extremely serious injuries associated with hernia repair patients. In some cases, AlloDerm has caused patients to undergo painful revision surgeries to correct the problems associated with the defective skin grafts.
